As I mentioned on my previous post, I’d like to introduce Phonics to you all. Yes, you. Whether you are a mother, a father or even a teacher, you need to know about Phonics. Are you already familiar with it?
What is Phonics?
a method of teaching people to read by correlating sounds with letters or groups of letters in an alphabetic writing system. (-google-)
Phonics helps young learners in learning how to read and spell precisely. Phonics is recommended as the first strategy that children should be taught in helping them learn to read. It also helps children develop all the other vital reading skills and hopefully gives them a real love of reading. If you happen to have a child who learns reading by using Phonics, you will notice that she/he loves reading so much and feels excited to read more. Then suddenly you feel so proud of her/him, right?
Hey, my child can read fluently! 🙂
However, learning to read is not such a simple and easy process. It takes time, effort, and patience of course from both the teacher and the student. The most important thing, we are not supposed to force the child to read. We should sense the signs whether the child is ready to learn how to read or not. Again, learning how to read is a personal thing. Two children at the same age may show different responses in reading. One may be ready but another may not. You don’t need to worry if your little child doesn’t give a good sign in reading. Children are just supposed to play anyway. In Finland, children start to go to school at the age of 7! So, let your child enjoy the life.
If you are interested in knowing further about Phonics, you may learn the letter sounds from this infographic below.
Those are the single sounds that you need to know. When you can master those basic sounds, go on with the diagraphs and more. Next, I will give you some word examples to be spelled and read by using phonics.
